Whether in the countryside or a major city, many Japanese people ride bicycles. The most commonly used type is the city cycle—better known as a ママチャリ (mamachari), meaning "mom's bicycle"—and rows of them can often be seen parked outside train stations and supermarkets. There’s a very big bicycle culture in Japan. In fact, in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, one can visit the Shimano Bicycle Museum. Here, visitors can learn about the history and engineering of bicycles, as well as bicycle culture from around the world. As one can see, Japanese people love bicycles.

Opened in 1992 as the Bicycle Museum Cycle Center, this museum reopened in March 2022 as the Shimano Bicycle Museum. Here, it’s not limited to Japanese bicycles; visitors can learn about bicycles from all over the world. From what’s said to be the (and some of the) oldest bicycles in the world to modern-day bicycles, and from the history of cycling to the engineering behind it, there’s a great deal to explore at this museum. In addition to its rich exhibits, there’s a reason this museum is located in the city of Sakai. This is one town of Japan (and of the world) with a thriving bicycle industry. Shimano Inc. (headquartered here) is widely regarded as a global leader in bicycle components, producing many of the components used in road bikes, mountain bikes, and other performance bicycles. As a result, the city of Sakai is considered a major hub of the bicycle industry. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call it a “bicycle town”.

Upon entering the Shimano Bicycle Museum, visitors are first shown a documentary-style movie. This movie showcases the birth of what’s considered the oldest bicycle in the world, and how bicycles have been used worldwide. One will learn about the history of bicycles and how they’ve changed over time.

After learning about the fundamentals of bicycles, visitors then proceed to the second floor. Here, one will find more bicycles than they can count. Many historically significant bicycles are on display here, including a large number of original models (not replicas). The sheer number of exhibits can be overwhelming, and many, without a doubt, will be surprised to see just how many there are. From designs that appear uncomfortable to ride to others that seem almost impossible to ride, the collection includes bicycles in a wide variety of shapes and forms. This exhibition room offers a clear and engaging overview of how bicycles have changed throughout history.

Moving on to the next room, one will find a wide range of modern-day bicycles. In this room, they can learn about the types of bicycles manufactured today, as well as how they’re constructed and the engineering behind them. Everything is easily explained. Along with a large number of disassembled bicycle parts on display, there are also several hands-on exhibits. One can gain a better understanding of bicycles as a mode of transportation. After learning about the history of bicycles in the previous room and then stepping into this one, it becomes easy to appreciate their appeal.

Lastly, one will make their way to the fourth floor. Here, a variety of unusual bicycles are on display. With ones that look like cars, a variety of bicycles that one (most likely) has never seen before can be found. Many of these bicycles don’t look comfortable to ride, and some appear as though they cannot be ridden at all. Along with unusually shaped bicycles, disassembled bicycle parts are on display, along with some small models of bicycles. One is sure to develop an interest in bicycles after viewing them. Although there aren’t as many exhibits here as on the other floors, what’s on display is highly intriguing. It’s well worth taking the time to explore this section.

For many Japanese people, bicycles are a common means of transportation, and many likely ride one every day. At the Shimano Bicycle Museum, one can learn in detail about the history of bicycles, how they’ve changed around the world, and the types made in Japan. Through movies and actual historical bicycles, learning about bicycles (enjoyably) is part of the museum’s appeal. Even those who don’t normally ride bicycles can enjoy wandering through the exhibits. Since Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, is also a center of the bicycle industry, seeing precision engineering and craftsmanship up close is another highlight of the museum.
