伊邪那岐命 (izanagi-no-mikoto) and 伊邪那美命 (izanami-no-mikoto) were two gods sent out to create lands for people to live in. From the heavens, they were given the spear 天の沼矛 (ame-no-nuboko). Standing on the bridge 天の浮橋 (ame-no-ukihashi), they thrust the spear into the ocean, causing drops of saltwater to drip from its tip. These drops formed the island of 於能凝呂島 (onogorojima).

Izanagi-no-mikoto and Izanami-no-mikoto then descended to the island of Onogorojima, where they built the 天の御柱 (ame-no-mihashira) bridge, from which they stood. After agreeing to take form and live as man and wife, they then went on to create a series of islands known as 大八洲 (ōyashima). These eight islands eventually became what is often referred to today as the “Land of the Rising Sun”, Japan.

Japan is said to have been founded in the year 660 BC. Since then, a rich culture has developed throughout its long history. Much of this culture is unique to Japan, including traditions such as the performing arts and the Shintō religion. The fact that Japan is an island nation has also helped shape this culture; much of it is unlike anything found elsewhere in the world.
